a little unexpected

The other day my uncle phoned me to say that he had some old movies (VHS mind you) that he was cleaning out and offered to give them to me.  As a kid I used to always borrow movies from him.   His collection was vast -  He had ALL the Elvis movies!  Blue Hawaii was my favourite!  I think he belonged to every movie club that existed.
Anyway today I went up and he had 3 boxes full for me to take!

ps. - mum, I drove up...and didn't injure myself or others!  I even drove back home too.

the original Doctor Dolittle is in here!! The one with Rex Harrison & the 2-headed llama!

This box has all the James Bond movies - I'm watching "The Living Daylights" right now.  Also, "The Birds" & lots of Audrey Hepburn movies!

This one has all the Elvis movies, all the Pink Panther movies, and he Wizard of Oz.

My Aunt invited hubby & me to stay for dinner but we had to decline.  She was determined to feed us one way or another so she sent us home with a bag of potatoes.
They are mini potatoes that are red, white, and blue!!!
Have you ever seen blue potatoes?!

you have now!  they are really like a deep purple, even on the inside!
I googled them and they supposedly taste just like regular potatoes.
I roasted some in the oven with pork chops to take as lunch to work tomorrow.
Can't wait!

A while ago I noticed FringeGirl started to post lists of things she was thankful for.  I thought that was such a good idea.  Her lists make me laugh and make me think about what I'm thankful for.  It's crucial to focus on the good things in life, I believe, because it's so easy to spiral into being negative.
Adrienne from The Rich Life (on a budget) also devotes posts to the things in her life that are positive and bring her joy.
So, I started a twitter account with the sole intent of just tweeting things I'm thankful for and that make me smile!
I've linked it on the side bar to your right.  I'm thankful we can all do little things to make the world a better place.  Join me!  @thankfulgal

Hubby's Office Reno

Hubby is moving up in the world.  He's partnered up with some fellow industry professionals and they have all moved in to a new office.
The new space definitely needed some fixing up before moving in though.

hubby doing some serious flooring work!

definitely needs some love.

thanks to S for all your help.  Child labour is still the most cost-effective way to go :)

Goodbye ugly carpet!

Some places in the unit put the carpet trim back up on the wall...I wouldn't let hubby.
I just couldn't do it.

So, his space is done except for the trim.  We'll go this week to pick something out.

Cuz I just can't embrace the carpet.

Laying the flooring wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.  This was a floating click floor so we didn't need nails or glue!  Easy peasy!
and I even used the saw!

I'll keep you posted on the decorating!

Toilet Paper Fun

I think I missed my calling.
At my cousin's bridal shower last week all the guests split in to two teams and each made a toilet paper wedding dress.  It was so much fun!
My sis (or, Daughter #2 as you may know her) was the model on my team

I worked on the flower details and making an asymmetrical bodice.

while other members of the team added a lovely bow detail.

and, of course, a veil.

here is my lovely cousin, the real bride to be, in her fun short bubble hem dress.

Have you ever made a toilet paper dress?  It's a lot of fun and you need less toilet paper than you would think.  I highly recommend it as a fun party game....or, you know, if you just want to play with toilet paper and you have a willing model.

His & Hers

Hubby & I both received mail from Capital One the other day - neither of us have cards with them.
So thoughtful of those Capital One people to send each of us one....though I am slightly envious that hubby's had a holographic effect.

New Features

I can't sit idly by anymore.
The random mail sent to my husband is ridiculous and I simply have to share.  I have no idea what he signed up for to get on these mailing lists - I can only hope there has been a case of mistaken identity.

Today for instance, look what showed up in our mail box addressed to him:

WARNING: partial nudity!

I opened it, how could I not?!  I had to know what this miracle product was called!

of course, The Fat Jab!  What else would an anti-cellulite cream be called?!

Stay tuned.  I'm sure there will be more.

While I was searching through my pictures for some that were photoshop-able candidates for THE hat, I came across some from the day my friend P and I went out for coffee.

Notice anything:
P's cup didn't have a sip hole?!  How weird is that?  Has that ever happened to you?

Speaking of P, she emailed me these pictures the other day:

Aren't those hilarious?  Great marketing strategy because I would definitely look twice.  If you ever see the Coca-Cola bag anywhere let me know ASAP.  I want one for my hubby!  I will pay for you to mail it to me!

Also I want to apologize for the gratuitous Princess Beatrice hat photos.  I really do have great taste in hats, as evidenced in the following photo:
At my nephew's 5th birthday party last week we smashed a dinosaur pinata in half then fashioned hats out of each of the halves.  My nephew started it...really, he did...totally his idea...
I have a great pic of hubby in the dino hiney hat, but out of love and respect I won't post it here...I think I'd rather save it for blackmail purposes down the's always a good idea to have a blackmail photo of the one who knows your deepest secrets ;)

I hope all of you had a lovely day Sunday of either being pampered or pampering your mamma!

Princess Beatrice's Hat...

Princess Beatrice's royal wedding hat goes viral

06 May 2011It's the hat that rocked and shocked the world. Now Princess Beatrice's royal wedding hat has taken on a life of its own...

Hilary Alexandar (fashion journalist) tweeted this earlier today.  I couldn't resist sharing.

this one's my favourite!

"what is it?"

Bobbi!  This one's for you!  Her hat grows kittens!

I would argue that this one is in poor taste...but so was the original...
I even wore it on my wedding in 2007 - so ahead of my time

sis was jealous so she had to try it on too!

Karl Lagerfeld has decided to include the hat as part of the CHANEL uniform!

Lucky me!

Do you want to wear the hat?  You can put the hat on yourself or someone else!  LOVE that this website exists! Just scroll down to the very bottom of the page and there is a tool that let's you upload a picture!

Beatrice's Hat Says...

...Happy Mother's Day Mumsy!

Go wish her happy mother's day too at the Loyalist Cottage

Friday, May 6, 2011

I've always been a hat person, but the Royal Wedding has given me an extra dose of inspiration.
Found this photo collage on someoneelse's blog and now I forget whose!  Yours? Let me know in the comments!

Also providing inspiration is the new CHANEL summer collection at my store.  Being the counter manager part of my responsibility is to wear the new seasons colours (it's a hard gig, I know).  But, sometimes that means wearing things that are a little outside of my personal comfort zone.
For instance, the Mimosa nail polish.

It's fun and bright, but not what I'd normally choose.  I usually do nude or dark on my nails.
So, to 'pull off' this colour on my nails I felt I needed a splash of it somewhere else...
et voila!
The answer.  I fun fascinator I whipped up yesterday morning.

Hubby thinks I should sell them, who knows, maybe I should put some on Esty and see what happens!

Have a good weekend!
oh, and Happy Mother's Day to all applicable :)

New Hat!

My hat from Etsy arrived Friday!

I bought it from Alpine Glow Vintage.  She was lovely to deal with and has lots of cute vintage items.
It was simple and pretty, but I felt I should spruce it up a bit.

Saturday I bought some fixings to customize it.
I want to wear this to a co-worker's wedding this summer so I felt it should be a little more 'fancy'.

I knew I couldn't use feathers because I know another guest attending and she has quite the feather phobia.  So unfortunate.

So flowers it was.

I made the piece so it could be removed.
That way I can refashion it to go with multiple outfits or just wear it plain.

here's the dress I plan to wear to the wedding:
I have a peachy-coral cardigan to wear with.

Now I just need my hat pins!
