Random Stuff

Ahh, did you see Love It Or List It last night?!!!
Yet another shameless Vim plug...and this time David Visentin, the realator was in on it!!
Seriously WNetwork people, do you think we believe these situations?

Remember my poor excuse for a garden?  It's blooming and doing quite well now.  I even have lettuce! Have you ever smelled fresh garden lettuce?  It smells so good!

I love my giant hosta.  I'm going to divide it into 2 or 3 pieces next year.

I think I have slugs devouring my dahlia

My lettuce is my fav!  I'm going to eat it tomorrow in my egg salad sandwhich!

Isn't this rediculous!?  My friend won a set of 3 of these at work so she gave me and another friend one.
She also gifted me this:

It's a tissue...and the bathing suit on the left matches the shot glass.  Too bizarre.

I made muffins tonight!  I got to test drive my new sillicone muffin them!  Once you let the muffins cool they peel right off.

and they kind of match my mixing bowl.

Look at the mini ones!  It's a great way to use left over batter when you don't have enough to make more big ones.

Now I'm off to have a mini muffin as a night time snack!

Patience + Gift Card = New Dress

You know that feeling when you put your hand in a pocket of old pants, or a coat that was packed away and you realize there's money in it? Whether it's 1 dollar or 5, you just feel elated!  I had a similar moment yesterday.  I realized that I have a gift card in my wallet that I had totally forgotten about.  I got it for my birthday (in March) and there was still $15.00 left!!!
So, I headed back to Zellers the land of my tres fab dress fashion show and decided to see if my beloved red dress was on sale...and low and behold it was!  See what happens when you embrace thrift people?  The universe listens.

I heart it!  I think it would look good with my red trench (and look how clean my bathroom looks!)

yup, it does.  This trench I mostly paid for with a birthday gift certificate too.

The dress was originally $39.97 and I totally had no good reason to buy it except that I liked it (I know, that should be reason enough, but I couldn't justify it) so today I found it on sale for $20.00 and had $15.35 left on the gift card!! After taxes I paid like 7 bucks! So happy am I.  It was such a steal that I thought I should buy it in another colour/pattern, but I think my husband would have given me one of his utterly disparaging 'looks' and then sighed and then I would have felt bad for buying 3 dresses in one week...and really and truly not needing I just bought the red one and enjoyed it.
How many dresses do I own....I'm going to go count....

*please entertain yourself, this could take a moment.  My closet, and whole bedroom at the moment, is a bit like walking into a great abyss. *

Neat freaks and FF please look away now

Please note this photo has, tragically, not been styled for dramatic effect...I had 20 minutes to make the rest of my apartment look publicable so my bedroom took one for the team.  Also note the totally '80s comforter that stays on my floor as my dog has now adopted it.

ok, I made it

I have 22 hanging up in my closet.
8 of them are black (2 of them black & white)
1 (not prev. counted) is in a bag to go to my sister as it is too small and I have never even worn it :(
And I have not counted out of season dresses that are packed away in the garage....
Or my wedding dress, prom dresses, and various gowns that my mother so graciously boards.  Maybe you should post a pic of those mumsie.

Dresses seem to be my new shopping addiction, as well as wigs.  It used to be jackets, but that's subsiding now.  What are some of your favourite wardrobe items?

Some fav dress moments:

Gift from a friend!

I constantly borrow this dress from my sis-in-law!

What girl doesn't love her wedding dress?!

Mermaid costume fashioned from my old roomie's bridesmaid dress

This says everything about our personalities.  I am a little black dress and hubby is a ball cap and sweatshirt.
(this dress was not included in above little black dress count.  I do still have it and love it dearly, but it tragically doesn't currently fit...ugh...someday...)

Thanks for indulging me!  Happy Monday.

Zellers Fashion Show

Yesterday while at work, my sister called me up with an impromptu invitation to spend the night at her house in town ( I live out in the country and just work in town).  Her hubby has been away for work for a few days and she was starting to feel a wee bit lonely.
I said yes and then began to wonder what I would wear to work the next day.  So, I decided I would meet my sis at the mall when she was done work.  Conveniently enough, one can buy clothes at a mall!
In the spirit of thrift I headed to Zellers to find something cheap and fabulous.
I will share my quest with you:

tres retro

tres fun

tres cleavage

tres chic

tres swirly

back in my own dress.

Which one did I get?  Thrift people! I went for the 'tres swirly' because it was $19.99.   I was tempted to splurg for the 'tres fun' red dress, but am limited to a black & white dress code at work...and it was $39.99.
I am going to to visit it often in the hopes that it goes on sale

PS.  how do we like the new hair?  I am still slightly troubled by my  Heath Ledger hair dilemma, so I've embraced wigs.  This the second in my sure to be growing collection.

Love It or List It or Shamless Product Placement

K, I get that reality tv is a term to be used lightly.  I know that often it's scripted, it's edited, people are chosen for their chemisty on camera.  I accept that, expect that, even.  One reason I love reality tv programs on decorating and renovatng is that somehow they seem less phoney and almost practical.  I feel like the people on them are real people.  But there are times when I am let down.  Those of you who have been watching the program "Love It or List It" surely know what I'm talking about.

Ever since I started seeing designer Hilary Farr do Vim Cream commmercials I have seen shamelessly obvious plugs for Vim on Love It or List It....and I am not impressed.   Are you with me?  If we have to sit through the commercials between the shows I definately don't want the show itself to be a commercial!

In case you are not familiar with the show, here is an exerpt from their website.

"In each hour-long episode realtor David Visentin and designer Hilary Farr compete for the homeowners' final decision to stay or go. David's insider perspective on the real estate market helps target listings to prospective buyers, but Hilary is determined to show homeowners that, within their budget, she can transform their worn-out house into a castle they can love. Watch as Hilary shamelessly promotes her new lucrative partnership with Vim Cream, not to be outdone by Swiffer and Bounty who have been subtley invading home reno shows for years now.  Spot the rediculous messes and count to see how long each close-up of Vim lasts.  If the owners decide to list it, Hilary's hard work adds to the home's resale value. It's a tough decision either way. Which choice would you make?"
* words in italics my own, although wnetwork is certainly free to publish this version.

Rocket Dog Woe

When I was in NYC this past April I bought some lovely Rocket Dog sandals.  They are even named Lovely on the website.  Friends of mine have had their sneakers.  It seemed like a very fun brand so I decided to make these sandals mine.

They were perfect with almost any outfit.  I could stand on them all day at work as they were super comfortable...notice that I said "were".
I bought these sandals on April 30 of this year and look at my 'lovely' sandals now:

This is not even 2 months people!!

I've never 'worn out' a pair of shoes in my life!  Now when I walk I make a clangy metal sound because it's worn right through the sole.
I called a local shoe repair place and the gentleman estimated that it would be between $20 - $40 to resole them...but they only cost $29.99 in the first place!  And, I don't want to pay to have them resoled if they are only going to look like this again in a month.

What's a gal to do?!

I emailed Rocket Dog customer service, that's what I did.
They responded quickly saying that if they weren't purchased online they couldn't give me a refund.
So, I replied that they were not from the website but from a recent US vacation and I expected something as this seems rediculous.
So, they had me send in pics and wanted a receipt.  I told them I didn't have the receipt, only the box, and was honest in telling them that I did get them on sale for $29.99.  I asked if they could resole them as I really came to love these shoes.
They replied by saying I could have a credit for $29.99 that's good only on their website, and it will expire in July.  While this sounds good, the shoes are not on sale on their website, they are $49.99 and shipping is $18.95  (all in US dollars by the way, and they know I'm in Canada).
So, my credit will really only cover shipping for shoes that I cannot afford to buy again.  It will go unused, which, I'm assuming is exactly what they want.
I'm still very dissapointed.
I replied and told them as much.  We shall see what they come back with.

I ask you, What's a gal to do?!

Hilarity has a name

her name is Dot.

Stephnie Weir played this character on MADtv.

I cannot watch this without laughing so hard I cry...and I mean hyperventilate, can't breathe, can't see for the tears, can't speak, cry.
If you do not know Dot I will give you the scoop.
These skits started when she was 5 and go until she's 7.
She has a genius twin sister
Her parents are ashamed of her, often not admitting she's their child.
Dot wears gloves, at all times.
Dot believes in Jesus.

These are some of my favourites.  Please youtube more of them and laugh until you cry.
(Is anyone else bothered that youtube is now recognized as a verb?)

spelling is fun!

I'm watching the Scripps National Spelling Bee...on TSN.  Did you catch that, The SPORTS Network.  I'm a mid-twenties gal, home on a Friday night to watch kids (ages 8-15) spell words.  It's the best television ever, who needs "reality" tv when you have this.  The intensity and seriousness of it is remarkable, this is the finals people.
And the commentators are hysterical...especially the chick (who is dressed to the nines, blonde hair extensions and all) that interviews the heartbroken children who misspelled their word by one letter...or, as in the case of the one Canadian contestant, she just couldn't hear correctly.  The commentators remind me of those in golf games, speaking in very hushed intense tones, mostly saying filler and nonsense.
If you've never witnessed the glory of a spelling bee I recommend finding the documentary "Spellbound".  It follows the funny & poignant journey of several contestants in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.  I own it.  Some of these kids (and their families) are crazy.  I have heard it said that there is a fine line between genius & insanity...
Meanwhile, I've typed at least 5 words from this post into google search just to make sure I'm spelling them correctly...even that, Correctly...1 'r' or 2, I had self doubt and had to double check.  How do these kids spell these crazy words in front of parents, judges, opponents, and on television! (I had to look up opponents).
Below are pics from the Bee:

our Canadian Laura Newcombe after being eliminated for spelling “confiserie” c-o-l-f-i-s-e-r-i-e.  The ironic part is that it's a french word and Canada is a billingual country; both French and English are our official languages, eh.  O Canada.

Here is trailer for the Spellbound documentary. Soo good!

Fashion Choices

the weather has been very gray & dreary lately.  I'm always temped to wear gray comfy things when the weather is like this.  This past Sunday morning was one such day, but I decided to challange the weather and will the sun to come out with my secret weapon.  I reccomned my secret weapon to you all.  It is: old lady florida flower pants!
I found these at a second hand store last week.  At first I tried them on as a joke, but then I realized 3 things:
1. They fit well
2. My hubby will hate them
3. I can wear them to church & my hubby's little cousin will love them
so, I bought them...for $5.95 & took a pic in the dressing room so I could share the experience.

At church on Sunday I was explaing to one of the guys in our youthgroup that I was wearing these pants to make it stop raining and encourage the sun.  He quickly replied "Maybe they need watering".  But you know what?  By the end of the service it was a beautiful sunny day.  See!  Get out your crazy flower pants people.  Embrace them.
Now, to prove that I can look fashionable without flower pants (but still on the cheap) check this out! A friend of mine gave me a fab dress the other day that I love muchly.  It has a very 60s vibe, which is totally up my alley.
I am sporting the Red Pheonix Emporium necklace my mum recently gave me...I love free outfits!!
